Introduction


Welcome to Worldictionary! Spend a few minutes going through this guide to learn how to use Worldictionary. We will introduce you to a number of useful Worldictionary functions, including real-time translation, the new sentence translation feature, and etc that will help you know the meaning of words, wherever you are.

Note: Translation in Worldictionary is done by connecting to Google services, so your Phone must connect to network, unless you use offline Penpower dictionary.

Make your first search in Real-time Translation

Worldictionary can recognize Traditional Chinese(Horizontal/Vertical), Simplified Chinese(Horizontal/Vertical), Japanese(Horizontal/Vertical), English, Korean, Germany, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, Norwegian, Polish, Hungarian, Russian, Czech, Slovak, Romanian, Indonesian, and etc., and leverage online dictionary’s translation technologies to translate the recognized words into various languages. Simply point your camera to the word that you want to look up to, and then Worldictionary will return the corresponding translation result within seconds. With this in mind, let’s make your first search.


Step 1. At the main screen of Worldictionary, you will see a large magnifier with a focus indicator in the center.

Note:
1) Tap the language bar Main to select the source and target languages. Source languages are on the left, and target languages are on the right. If you want to switch the language pair, simply tap help_switch". Tap the back button to close the language menu.
2) You also can select the translation engines by tapping the button on the top of the screen, or tapping the button to add other dictionaries. Adding dictionaries will also get you an offline dictionary.



3) Worldictionary can recognize horizontal and vertical text for Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese.
4) If the source languages are Traditional Chinese (Horizontal/Vertical), Simplified Chinese (Horizontal/Vertical), or Japanese (Horizontal/Vertical), please aim the crosshair on the initial character.
5) If you are in a low-light condition, please tap the flash button Mainto enable the flash function. Tap Main again to disable the flash function.
6) To get the best recognition quality, please hold your phone right above the text, keep the word in focus, and hold your phone steady.



Step 2. Worldictionary will show the recognized word and its translation result in the list on the right side. In addition to word by word translation, Worldictionary will also recognize phrases next to the crosshair and list the phrase's translation as the second item in the list.

Tips:
1) If the text is too long to display, the app will abbreviate the first word, starting with the initial letter and ending with an ellipsis.
2) Tap Main to listen to how this word is pronounced.

Step 3. The lower right corner lists your searching history. Tap a word here to see more information about it.
Note: If the source languages are Traditional Chinese (Horizontal/Vertical), Simplified Chinese (Horizontal/Vertical), or Japanese (Horizontal/Vertical), this list will show other probable recognition candidates for you to choose. Scroll down and you can view previous searching history.

Step 4. Tap a word in this list and you can see more information about this word.

  • If you use offline dictionary engine, you can tap to look up the translation of the word on the internet.
  • Choose to search from [Google]Main, [Wikipedia]Main or [YouTube]Main in the top of the screen to make a quick search for this word.
  • Tap to add this word into Bookmark.
  • Tap to listen to how this word is pronounced.
  • You can also type in the word directly into the search field above to search. Please refer Type in word to search.
  • Tap to return to the previous screen.

Tap image to translate

Worldictionary is a great tool for looking up words, not just via real-time translation. You can take a picture of a paragraph from a printed screen, such as newspapers and road signs, or load a picture from your phone’s photo album. Worldictionary can recognize words or phrases in the image and show the translation result on the screen.  

Step 1. Launch Worldictionary and you will see a large magnifier glass with a crosshair in the center.
Step 2. Tap to take a photo for documents. The document image will be shown on the screen after taking the photo. You can also tap Main icon to load in an image directly from your phone’s photo album.


Note:
1) To get the best recognition quality, please hold your phone right above the text, keep the texts in focus, hold your phone steady, and take a picture.
2) Tap or to rotate the image if necessary.



Step 3. Tap on a word in the image to check the translation of it. This will be highlighted and the corresponding translation result will be listed in the lower right list. In addition to word by word translation, Worldictionary will also recognize phrases next to the crosshair and list phrase's translation as the second item in the list.

Type in words to search

While Worldictionary is immensely useful as an escort interpreter, it also acts as a traditional translation machine. This allows you to type words and get the meanings instantly.

Step 1. Tap the text icon on the upper-left corner of Worldictionary’s main screen to bring up the search field.
Step 2. Type a word into the search field and start to search this word.
Step 3. You will get the translation result with the detailed information of this word.

Step 4. Tap to delete words in the search field and then you can rewrite a new word to search.

Sentence Translation


Worldictionary supports sentence translation.

Step 1. Tap to choose a source of the document.

a. Camera

1. Select [Camera] .
2. Focus and take a picture of a page.

Tips:
1) Please take snapshots in good lighting conditions and eliminate light reflection and casting shadows.
2) If you are in a low-light condition, please tap the flash button to enable the flash function.
3) You can rotate your Phone sideways to make sure the whole page is completely in the view finder area.


b. album
1. Select [Albums].
2. Choose an existing document image in albums.

Note:
1) The sentence translation only works for high resolution images.


Step 2. Preview the image.



Tips:
1) Tap the language bar text to select the source and target languages.
2) Tap to rotate the image to proper orientation.
3) You can tap to retake or reload the image.
4) Tap to back the main screen.
5) Tap to enter the sentence translation page.


Step 3. Please select the text you want to recognize. Tap to add the paragraph to the below text board.

Step 4. Please check the recognition result and revise.

Step 5. Tap to start translating the sentence. Please check the translation result. You can revise the text of the original sentence, if necessary. The translation result will be changed as well.

Tips:
1) You can tap text to share the recognition and translation result with your friends.
2) Tap to add sentence to bookmark.

Bookmark

a. Add Bookmark (Vocabulary & Sentence)
Step 1. You can add vocabulary and sentence to bookmark in the search page or sentence translation page.
Tips:
1) You can select importance and category when you add bookmark.
2) You can add the word to Bookmark in the history page directly.


b. Category Management
Step 2. Tap to enter the category management page.

Tip: In the category management page, you can tap to add new category or delete category. If you delete a category, all the bookmarks in the category will become [Unfiled].

c. View Bookmark
With Worldictionary bookmark function, saving favorite words to the bookmark list is quick and easy.


Step 3. You can open Bookmark to view the words you have bookmarked.
Step 4. Tap text on the main screen to open the Bookmark.

Tips:
1) You can tap [ Vocabulary ] to view vocabulary bookmark or tap [ Sentence ] to view sentence bookmark.
2) Tap to switch the bookmark’s category.


Step 5. The words are listed by date, alphabets and importance. You can make keyword search by inputting keywords in the search field.

Step 6. Tap any word in this list and you can see more information about this word, such as pronunciation, usage, and etc.

  • If you use offline dictionary engine, you can tap Main to look up the translation of the word on the internet.
  • Choose to search from [Google]Main, [Wikipedia]Main or [YouTube]Main in the top of the screen to make a quick search for this word.
  • Tap to listen to how this word is pronounced.

d. Edit Bookmark


Step 7. If you want to import bookmarks, please tap / to import bookmarks.
Tip: The bookmarks of Worldictionary and WorldPenScan can be mutually imported each other.

Step 8. Please tap / , then you can sort your bookmarks.
Step 9. Please tap / to enter the edit bookmark page.

Tips:
1) Tap to export .ppbm format bookmarks to cloud storage.
2) Tap to change bookmark’s category.
3) Tap to delete bookmarks.
4) Tap to return to the previous screen.

History

All the words you have searched will be listed into History for you to view quickly.


Step 1. Tap Main on the main screen to go to History.

Step 2. The words are listed by date or alphabets. You can make keyword search by inputting keywords in the search field.

Step 3. Tap any word and you can see more information about this word, such as pronunciation, usage, and etc.

  • If you use offline dictionary engine, you can tap Main to look up the translation of the word on the internet.
  • Choose to search from [Google]Main, [Wikipedia]Main or [YouTube]Main in the top of the screen to make a quick search for this word.
  • Tap Main to listen to how this word is pronounced.
  • Tap Main to return to the History.

Step 4. If you want to delete all words in the history list, please tap .
Step 5. Tap , then add this word to Bookmark.
Step 6. Press Main button on the phone to return to the previous screen.

Import offline dictionary file

Worldictionary allows you to import StarDict and Lingoes dictionary files (*.bz2 and *.ld2), if you have the dictionary file, please follow the steps below to import:

1. You can find the shared StarDict or Lingoes files on internet, and tap the link to download then save the dictionary file into your cloud storage, e.g., dropbox.

2. Login your cloud storage in Worldictinary, then select the dictionary file you want to import and tap .

3. You can switch the dictionaries to use if you have imported various dictionary files.

4. Choose the recognize language which that dictionary file supports, for example you import a English - Chinese dictionary, you have to choose English as recognize language.

Settings

Tap the settings icon to set whether you want to save mages taken in Worldictionary to phone’s photo album, view the user’s guide, and know more about Worldictionary.

1. Save image to photos: Switch this function on to save the image taken in Worldictionary in your phone’s photo album.

2. Purchase dictionary: Add other dictionaries.

3. Recognize Hong Kong characters:Switch this function on to recognize Hong Kong characters precisely.

4. Help: Tap it to view the user’s guide.

5. About: Tap it to see the version of this app and more information about Worldictionary.

6. Contact us: Tap it to write email to contact tech support for help.
