Introduction
Welcome to Worldictionary! Spend a few minutes going through this guide to learn how to use Worldictionary. We will introduce you to a number of useful Worldictionary functions, including real-time translation, the new sentence translation feature, and etc that will help you know the meaning of words, wherever you are.
Note: Translation in Worldictionary is done by connecting to Google\Bing services, so your iPhone must connect to network, unless you use offline Penpower dictionary.

Make your first search in Real-time Translation
Worldictionary can recognize Traditional Chinese(Horizontal/Vertical), Simplified Chinese(Horizontal/Vertical), Japanese(Horizontal/Vertical), English, Korean, Germany, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, Norwegian, Polish, Hungarian, Russian, Czech, Slovak, Romanian, Indonesian, and etc., and leverage Google's and Yahoo's translation technologies to translate the recognized words into various languages. Simply point your iPhone’s camera to the word that you want to look up to, and then Worldictionary will return the corresponding translation result within seconds. With this in mind, let’s make your first search.
Step 1: At the main screen of Worldictionary, you will see a large magnifier with a focus indicator in the center.

Step 2. Aim the focus indicator on the word you want to look up.
Note:
1) Tap the language bar
to select the source and target languages. If you want to switch the language pair, simply tap
. Tap anywhere on the screen above the language menu to close the language menu.
2) Worldictionary provides an offline Penpower English to Chinese (Traditional/ Simplified) dictionary and two online dictionaries, Google and Bing. Tap
to switch among dictionaries. In addition, you can tap
to buy other dictionaries.

3) Worldictionary can recognize horizontal and vertical text for Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese because they are unique in being able to written both horizontally and vertically.
4) If the source languages are Traditional Chinese(Horizontal/Vertical), Simplified Chinese(Horizontal/Vertical), or Japanese(Horizontal/Vertical), please aim the focus indicator on the initial letter.
5) If you are in a low-light condition, please tap the flash button
to enable the flash function. Tap
again to disable the flash function.
6) To get best recognition quality, please hold your iPhone right above the text, keep the word in focus, and hold your iPhone firmly.
Step 3. Worldictionary will show the recognized word and its translation result in the list. Besides word by word translation, Worldictionary will also recognize the word next to the focus indicator and list this two-word phrase's translation as the second item in the list.
Tips:
1. If the text is too long to display, the app will abbreviate the first word, starting with the initial letter and ending with an ellipsis.
2. Tap
to listen to how this word is pronounced.

Step 4. The lower right corner will list your history searching records, including this one. Tap the word here to see more information about this word.
Note:
If the source languages are Traditional Chinese(Horizontal/Vertical), Simplified Chinese(Horizontal/Vertical), or Japanese(Horizontal/Vertical), this list will show other probable recognition candidates for you to choose. Scroll down and you can view previous searching records.
Step 5. Tap the word in this list and you can see more information about this word, such as phonics, synonym, and etc.

Moreover, you can:
- If you use offline dictionary engine, you can tap
to look up the translation of the word on the internet.
- Choose to search from [Google], [YouTube], or [Wikipedia] in the top of the screen to make a quick search for this word.
- Tap
to add this word into Bookmark.
- Tap
and you can share this word with your friends via Email or SMS.
- Tap
to listen to how this word is pronounced.
A pinch and a tap lets you jump from one page to the next.
- You can also type in the word directly into the search field above to search. Please refer Type in word to search.
- Tap
to return to the previous screen.

Tap image to translate
Worldictionary is a great tool for looking up words, not just via Real-time Translation. You can take a picture of a paragraph or load a picture from your iPhone’s photo album. Worldictionary can recognize words or phrases in the image and show the translation result on the screen.
Step 1: Launch Worldictionary and you will see a large magnifier with a focus indicator in the center.

Step 2. Aim the focus indicator to the center of the paragraph, tap any place inside the magnifier, and take a picture of this paragraph. You can also tap
icon to load in an image directly from your iPhone’s photo album. Then you will see the image shown on the screen.
Note:
1) To get best recognition quality, please hold your iPhone right above the text, keep the texts in focus, hold your iPhone firmly, and take a picture.
2) You can tap
to rotate the image.

Step 3. Tap on the word in the image to check the translation of it. This will be marked and the corresponding translation result will be listed in the lower right list. Besides word by word translation, Worldictionary will also recognize the word next to the focus indicator and list this two-word phrase's translation as the second item in the list.

Now that we’ve learned how to add images to Worldictionary, let’s take a look at how you can also type in to check the words.

Type in words to search
While Worldictionary is immensely useful as an escort interpreter, it also acts as a traditional translation machine. This allows you to type words and get the meanings instantly.
Step 1. Tap the
icon on the upper-left corner of Worldictionary’s main screen to bring up the search field.
Step 2. Tap the search field to bring up the onscreen keyboard.
Step 3. Use the onscreen keyboard to type a word into the search field.
Tip: Worldictionary adds the word prediction feature. While you are typing, Wolrdictionary will predict and list words that you are most likely to input for you to choose.
Step 4. Tap [Search] on the lower right corner of the onscreen keyboard.
Step 5. You will get the translation result with the detailed information of this word.
Step 6. Tap
to delete words in the search field and then you can rewrite a new word to search.
Step 7. Tap
to return to the previous screen.

Sentence Translation
Worldictionary supports sentence translation.
Step 1. Tap
to choose a source of the document.

1. Select [Camera].
2. Tap
to focus and take a picture of a page.
Tips:
1). Please take snapshots in good lighting conditions and eliminate light reflection and casting shadows.
2). If you are in a low-light condition, please tap the flash button (iPhone 4 or above) to enable the flash function.
3). You can rotate iPhone sideways to make sure the whole page is completely in the view finder area.
4). You can also switch to the anti-shake mode by tapping
and the frame will become green. Then hold iPhone still and it will capture the image automatically.
b. album
1. Select [Albums].
2. Choose an existing document image in albums.
Note: The sentence translation only works for high resolution images.
Step 2. Preview the image.
- Tap
to rotate the image to proper orientation.
- You can tap
to retake or reload the image.
Step 3. Tap
and select the recognition language. Then, you can tap and hold on a word to select a paragraph. Tap
to add the paragraph to the below text board.
Step 4. Please check the recognition result and revise.
Tip: Before translation, you can tap
to share the recognition result with your friends via SMS or Email.
Step 5. Tap
to start translating the sentence. Please check the translation result. You can revise the text of the original sentence, if necessary. The translation result will be changed as well.
Tips:
1. You can tap
and select [SMS] or [Email] to share both the orginal sentence and translation result with your friends via SMS or Email.
2. Tap
to listen to the original or translation sentence.

Bookmark words
With Worldictionary bookmark function, saving favorite words to the bookmark list is quick and easy. Let’s look at a quick example:
Step 1. You can open Bookmark to view the words you have bookmarked.
Step 2. Tap
on the main screen to open the Bookmark list.
Step 3. The words are listed alphabetically. You can make keyword search by inputting keywords in the search field.
Step 4. Tap any word in this list and you can see more information about this word, such as pronunciation, usage, and etc.

Moreover, you can:
- If you use offline dictionary engine, you can tap
to look up the translation of the word on the internet.
- Choose to search from [Google], [YouTube], or [Wikipedia] in the top of the screen to make a quick search for this word.
- Tap
and you can share this word with your friends via Email or SMS.
- Tap
to listen to how this word is pronounced.
- Tap [Back] to return to [Bookmark].
Step 5. If you want to remove a word from Bookmark, please tap [Edit] and then tap
in front of the word that you want to remove and then tap [delete] to remove the word from Bookmark list.
Step 6. Tap [Close] to return to the previous screen.

History List
All the words you have searched will be listed into History for you to view quickly. History can collect as many as 500 words. How to check your searching history? Let’s look at a quick example:
Step 1. Tap
on the main screen to go to History.
Step 2. The words are listed by date. You can make keyword search by inputting keywords in the search field.
Step 3. Tap any word and you can see more information about this word, such as pronunciation, usage, and etc.

Moreover, you can:
- If you use offline dictionary engine, you can tap
to look up the translation of the word on the internet.
- Choose to search from [Google], [YouTube], or [Wikipedia] in the top of the screen to make a quick search for this word.
- Tap
and you can share this word with your friends via Email or SMS.
- Tap
to listen to how this word is pronounced.
- Tap [Back] to return to [History].
Step 4. If you want to delete all words in history list, please tap [Clear].
Step 5. The bookmark function is also available in History list. To add the word in History into Bookmark list, simply tap the bookmark icon
and select the words and tap [Done].
Step 6. Tap [Close] to return to the previous screen.

Settings
Tap the settings icon
to set whether you want to save the image taken in Worldictionary to iPhone’s photo album, view the user’s instruction, and know more about Worldictionary.
1. Translate Engine: Set the current transalte engine.
2. Display language label: Set to display language label in the Bookmark list and History list.
3. Save to photos: Switch this function on to save the image taken in Worldictionary in your iPhone’s photo album or vice versa.
4. Purchase dictionary: Tap it to buy other dictionaries. Select one dictionary to see its details and tap [Download] to buy it.
5. Help: Tap it to view the user’s guide. Tap [Contact us] in upper-right corner and you can write email to contact tech support for help.
6. About: Tap it to see the version of this app and more information about Worldictionary.
