FreeWriter for iPad Help

FreeWriter provides two handwriting modes: Chinese and English writing pad, which can recognize the handwriting in Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, English and numbers. Also, FreeWriter integrates with multiple assisting functions, such as "Candidate", "Post-related word", "Related phrase", "Homophone", "Artificial Intelligence" and punctuation for frequent uses to greatly increase your writing efficiency.

Chinese Writing Pad Interface


Chinese writing pad interface includes four main sections: Editing Toolbar, Editing Area, Assistance Toolbar and Handwriting Input Area. Besides, for the sake of your convenience, the handwriting interface will detect your viewing direction and change to vertical or horizontal way.

 

Editing Toolbar

/ Clipboard / Restore: Click [Clipboard] , all the words in Editing Area will be copied and able to be pasted onto other apps; click [Restore], the text will be restored.
Mail: Automatically open [Mail] and put your written text into e-mail.
Clean: Clean all the words from the editing Area.
Related phrase: Provide related phrases to speed up your input. Click the icon, the related phrase function will be turned on. You can turn off it by clicking the icon again.
homophone Homophone: Display all the possible characters which have the same sound as the recognized character beside the cursor.
ai AI: Open Artificial Intelligence to let FreeWriter learn and memorize your handwritings.
  Zoom out/ in: Change the size of the words in Editing Area by tapping one of these two buttons.
Settings: Set [Chinese Output] and other handwriting variation.

 

 

Assistance Toolbar

Candidate: Provide possible candidates for the word that had been recognized from your handwriting.
Post-related word: Provide possible related words for the recognized word. When you select another candidate, the post-related word will be renewed synchronously.
Punctuation: Click the icon, then you can choose the frequently-used punctuations from the list.
delete icon Delete: Click [Delete], you can delete the words ahead of the cursor or the selected words and the handwriting on the writing pad will be deleted as well.
Enter Enter: Click it to start a new paragraph.
Space: Insert a space.
/   Fullwidth/ Halfwidth form: You can switch fullwidth form and halfwidth form by tapping the icon. The punctuation behind Chinese characters will be fullwidth form and behind English alphabets, numbers and other symbols will be halfwidth form.
space Switch Chinese/ English input mode: Click this icon, you can easily switch Chinese and English input mode.
keyboard icon iPad keyboard: Switch to iPad's keyboard. You can tap keyboard icon to switch back to handwriting mode.

Tips:

  1. In Keyboard Mode, you can press to choose the language you want to use.
  2. If you want to change Keyboard Language in the Input Method, please go to [Settings]/ [General]/ [Keyboard]/ [Keyboard]. You can delete any language's keyboard by clicking [Edit] on the top right of the screen. Or click [Add New Keyboard] below to add more language's keyboard.

 

 

Handwriting Input Area

Chinese writing pad offers two handwriting frames for users to write continually. You can write Traditional and Simplified Chinese characters in either frame or alternately in both frames. In order to augment the ability of recognizing English alphabets and numbers, Chinese writing pad equips with English Input Area and Number Input Area in the left and right side of the pad.

  1. Chinese Input Area: While writing Chinese characters, please write a character in either frame, then write the next character in the other frame to make your writing smoother. 
  2. English Input Area: While writing English alphabets, please write in [English Input Area].
  3. Number Input Area: While writing numbers, please write in [Number Input Area].

Note: The Chinese writing pad can only recognize Chinese characters.

Using Chinese writing pad

  1. Start to write Chinese character in Handwriting Input Area.
    Note: In order to augment the ability of recognizing English alphabets and numbers,  please write English alphabets in [English Input Area] and numbers in [Number Input Area].
  2. During your writing process, the system will recognized the handwriting synchronously. The recognized character will appear beside the cursor.
  3. Choose the character among the candidate options to complete your text. You can also click another candidate to replace the one that had  been selected.

    Tips:

    • There is no time limit for you to write in Chinese handwriting input area so you can leisurely write every stroke of the characters. If you stop writing, your handwriting will stay in the handwriting input area. Once you added a stroke, the system will automatically renew the candidates and post-related words of the recognized character. The system will not send it until you select the candidate or write in the other frame. As for [English Input Area] and [Number Input Area], once you stop writing, your handwriting will be recognized and send to Editing Area immediately.
    • You can go to [Settings]/ [Chinese output] and choose the output as [Traditional character], [Simplified character] or [Traditional+Simplified].

       

  4. When you need to choose another characters which have the same sound as the recognized character, please click homophone and open the homophone list to choose the correct character.

     

     

  5. When your handwriting is too illegible to be recognized correctly or you want FreeWriter to memorize your handwriting, you can use [AI] function; so in the next time, while encountering the same style of handwriting, FreeWriter can recognize it accurately. The learning steps of AI are listed below:

    1) Click ai to open AI learning screen.

    2) You can use handwriting pad or iPad's keyboard to input the exact word which is corresponded with the one in handwriting form. Then, click [Done] to go back to the handwriting interface. If you don't want to conduct the learning process, please click [Cancel].

    3)While returning to the handwriting interface, you can see the initial word had been amended and the system also automatically learned your unique handwriting. Thus, FreeWriter will recognize the same handwriting precisely next time.

     

    Tips: FreeWriter can learn your handwriting automatically. For example, if you want to write "田" but your handwriting is too cursive, the character "田" will not be able to be recognized.  The exact character you want may be placed in the back of the candidate list. However, once you selected it from the list, in the next time, "田" will be listed in the first place for you to choose even if the handwriting is still cursive.

  6. Click to turn on / off the function of related phrase. Click a candidate then the related phrase list will appear at the right side of the editing area. You can choose the suitable phrase from the options and input it in the editing area..
  7. During the writing process, if you need to insert punctuation, you can select the punctuation that is on the frequent use list of [Punctuation].              
    • Tap to adjust the size of the words in Editing Area.
    • If you want to change a character in the editing area, the only thing to do is to move the cursor to the character so you can reselect the candidate and post-related word.
    • Click to clean the text from the editing area.

       

             

    Tips:

  8. You can click the words on the post-related list to quicken your input for the next word.

    Tips: If you can't find the post-related word or the punctuation you want in the display list, please click or , to look for more options.

  9. Click and the text will be cleared at the same time.
  10. Open the apps (e.g., Notes, Reminders, Calendar, Messages) that you need to paste the text on.
  11. Tap the editing area and select [Paste].                                                                          

     

    Note: When you copy the text, Text Area will be cleared simultaneously. If you want to restore the cleared text, please click . Also,  [Restore] function is only effective before writing a new character. Once you wrote it, the former cleared text can't be restored anymore.

English Writing Pad Interface

Editing Toolbar

Assistance Toolbar

Candidate Add a blank before the first alphabet:Candidate means that while sending text, a blank will be added in front of the first alphabet and this Candidate means the function is off. 
Candidate Make first alphabet uppercase/ lowercase: Click the icon will switch the first alphabet into uppercase or lowercase letter. The default setting is lowercase.

Candidate: Provide possible candidates for the word that had been recognized from your handwriting.  

Punctuation: Click the icon, then you can choose the frequently-used punctuations from the list.
delete icon  Delete: Click [Delete], you can delete the words ahead of the cursor or the selected words and the handwriting on the writing pad will be deleted as well.

Handwriting Input Area

English writing pad provides a continual writing area which allows users to write in the entire area. If the word you want to write is too long for the writing area, the area will automatically release more space from the right side when you have no space to write.

deleteall Clear the Last Stroke: Click this icon, you can clear the last stroke of your handwriting and view the previous state of the handwriting.
deleteall Clean the Handwriting: Click the icon, all the handwriting in the handwriting input area will be cleaned.
delete icon View the Previous One: Allow you to view the previous handwriting.
Enter View the Previous One: Allow you to view the next handwriting.

Note: The English writing pad can only recognize English alphabets.

Using English writing pad

  1. English handwriting input area allows users to write several words continually. Tap english.png , you can switch from Chinese input mode to English input mode. 

  2. Start to write the first English word.

    Tips:

    • English handwriting input area supports English and numbers' recognition. There is no time limit for you to write in this area. Even if the word has been recognized, you can still add more alphabets to complete your writing. 
    • If you want to clear the last stroke of your handwriting, please click Candidate; clean all the handwriting, please click Candidate .

       

  3. After the recognition process, the possible candidates will be listed. When there are too many candidates to list, please click switch_to_english.png to look for more options.

    Tips: You can write down the first few alphabets of the word and send them to the editing area. Then, the system will display a few words with the same prefix. For example, write "app", selecting the candidate "app" and send it to the editing area. Then, the candidate area will show words like "application". When you choose "application" as the candidate, "lication" will be added behind "app" so that you can save your time without writing the whole word.

     

  4. Select a candidate, then the word will be sent next to the cursor in Editing Area.

    Tips:

    • Before clicking , if you want to capitalize the first alphabet please tap Candidate .
    • Candidate means that while sending text, a blank will be added in front of the first alphabet and this Candidate means the function is off. 

     

  5. Click Candidate , all the handwritings and candidates will be cleaned.  Click Candidate, you can clear the last stroke of your handwriting and view the previous state of the handwriting.
  6. Click and the text will be cleared at the same time.
  7. Open the apps (e.g., Notes, Reminders, Calendar, Messages) that you need to paste the text on.
  8. Tap the editing area and select [Paste].

Sending e-mail

  1. Click  in the editing toolbar.
  2. Write the title of the e-mail on top of the editing area.
  3. Click to open [Mail]. If you want to cancel the mailing function, please tap .
  4. When [Mail] is open, the text in Editing Area will automatically be sent to the e-mail's editing area for you to edit.

Settings


Click , to set Chinese output or other handwriting settings.

 

Chinese output

You can set the Chinese output as:

  1. Traditional character: No matter write in Traditional or Simplified Chinese, the output will always be Traditional character.
  2. Simplified character: No matter write in Traditional or Simplified Chinese, the output will always be Simplified character.
  3. Traditional+Simplified: Write in Traditional Chinese, the output will be Traditional character; in Simplified Chinese, then get Simplified character. By selecting this option, you can output both characters at the same time and in the same text.

 

Settings

You can set the width and color of your handwriting.

  1. Ink Width: Use the slide bar to adjust the width of the handwriting.
  2. Ink Color: Provide six colors for you to choose.

 

General settings

Provide the setting for [Writing Area] and [ Homophone].

  1. Writing Area: Set the writing area at the right side or left side when the interface of FreeWriter is horizontal.  
  2. Homophone: Set "Zhu yin", "Hanyu pinyin" or "Yue pin" as the displaying order for Homophone's result.
